Inspiration Avenue Challenge - Wings

Now, I must confess to cheating a tad...

I decided to finish a picture I started for the IA Angel Challenge a few weeks ago, which I never completed...

I'd done this drawing in my regular sketchbook...

... of this painting by Rosso Fiorentina (c. 1520) in my Angels book by James Underhill (Element Books Ltd, 1995), p. 86.

I decided to paint the drawing using the unused gouache paints I found in my newly released art supplies, which had been trapped in the garage by dh's 'shed stuff' for the past year!

This is how the drawing looked yesterday...

I can tell you now, gouache is not for the faint-hearted!

I love it's opacity and strength - much more fibrant than watercolour paint - but it shows every single brushstroke... and once it's on the paper, that's it, no lifting, smudging, or even painting over...

Added to that, I'm still learning to control a brush left-handed, and fine work is still rather beyond me! (btw the picture's roughly 5x7in on ordinary drawing paper)

However, this is it completed today...

I am my own harshest critic, so all I can see are all the mistakes... but generally, I have to say, it's not bad as a first attempt with a new medium... and I'm quite proud of the little forearm strumming - it almost looks realistic...

But what do you think? I'd love any feedback... :)

I like your sketch! I have gouache and love the colors also. Still trying to learn how to work with them myself. Keep up the good work@

Considering you are doing this left-handed and one-handed, this is awesome Claire! I wish I could produce something this good with my dominant hand. Keep at it my love!

Nicely done Claire - I've not done very much in gouache, but I can see how brilliant the colours are in your painting. I love the effect you've achieved with the light falling on the golden hair - beautiful.

Bravo!
Take time to admire your work. Stand back, look at it, say to yourself, "I did that" and then say, "Well done
Claire"! Then have a toast for the gift you have to create art!
Great job!

I think it looks fabulous! Great painting & a cute image. Its always hard trying something new but usually great fun. I've never tried gouache; something for me to try in the future perhaps. Thanks for entering this gorgeous guitar playing cherub into this week's Wings challenge!

Very cool drawing! I think your version is cuter =) I like how you focused a little more on the shading too, it makes everything more joyful

You've done a great job, I've never used gouache, it sounds difficult!

Lovely! Very nice technique.

I think it's lovely ... the secret is to just practice, practice, practice. Have you ever gone back into Kelly Rae's or Genine's archives and looked at their beginning earliest work - the transformation over time in their art is amazing. Keep up the great work. xoxo Susan & les Gang

The only thing I know about gouache is how to pronounce it. I had no idea it was so hard to work with and couldn't be painted over. It's good to know, especially since I have never worked with it.

I'm so glad you pulled this out to finish- it turned out so well! I've never worked with Gouache but it sounds like a really unforgiving medium- bravo to you for seeing it through to the end!

I came over from Inspiration Avenue and love your entry. I love to read how people work through their art. I really like what you have done for this piece and from reading your post, it seems you have challenged yourself and that is a positive too. Very nice.
